Coach the skill not the drill

 

TRAINING PROCESS

1st phase

ABC skills & drills

Goal: micro skills to complete movement of the skill to simulation exercises using the skill

 

2nd phase 

Small sided & over loaded games 

Goal: skills being executed at pace

 

3rd phase 

Games with advantage to non focus team. e.g when focusing on team attack let def team play offside

Goal: skills being executed at pace and under pressure with a huge focus on vision, communication, work  off the ball & support play/lines

ABC technique

TAHI 1 v 1 knees- boxer’s hands, low v high, cheek on cheek/drive shoulders/punch out, wrap arms, land on top, bounce up, take space

RUA standing- break laces, low v high, cheek on cheek/drive shoulders/punch out, wrap arms, chase feet, land on top, bounce up, take space

TORU 1 v 1 walking- Track high, small steps, boxer’s hands, break laces, low v high, cheek on cheek/drive shoulders/punch out, wrap arms, chase feet, land on top, bounce up, take space

CATCH PASS

 

Key focus points catch: Small controlled steps, body position leaning forward, “Haka hands” but with outside hand in line with inside shoulder to square up, catch ball early but not over reach, fingers spread and thumbs pointing up, catch ball in position you want to pass, after catch keep ball high
